Chronic pain has become a consequential issue in the U.S., with many inadequate treatment responses like surgery or opioids, resulting in only short-term success. The missed opportunity lies in non-pharmacologic treatments, like physical therapy, that have been proven to address the root causes of pain and provide long-term relief. Moving towards patient-first models can lower costs and reshape the broader healthcare system, transforming pain care and improving patient outcomes. In this session, the speakers will discuss the paradigm shift in chronic pain management, reframing it as not just a clinical challenge but a broader strategic issue that impacts operations, reimbursement and patient satisfaction.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define how we analyze chronic pain in patients to determine the best treatment approach.
  • Identify how to slow the overprescription of opioids for chronic pain and how to gauge when opioids may be needed.
  • Describe patient-centered care models that improve outcomes and prioritize long-term healing.
