Physician leadership has changed significantly in the last several years. While the traditional chief medical officer position has long existed, more organizations are increasingly utilizing physicians in broader and more strategic and/or operational roles. While most organizations have physician leaders managing traditional medical staff functions, many are now seeking physician leaders who will take on more expansive tasks and responsibilities. This is particularly true in organizations that have multifaceted strategic partnerships and/or larger employed physician enterprises. Different kinds of physician leadership can also be key in complex systems combining academic and community services. And more physician leaders already in senior leadership jobs are increasingly moving into chief clinical officer, chief physician executive, COO or CEO positions. Moreover, more boards are seeking physician candidates for their CEO vacancies.

This session is designed to present and discuss different expanded senior leadership roles that many physician leaders are now moving into. Several of the newer physician leadership jobs that are more wide-ranging in nature will be identified and critiqued. Additionally, the different skill sets required for these positions will be discussed. Specifics on the competencies these broader positions require will be examined. While the target audience is mostly physician leaders, other senior leaders who attend will benefit in learning how to better involve their physician leaders in new assignments and projects. Attendees will learn the value of having physician leaders engaged in all-encompassing organizational leadership.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the many new roles and jobs that physician leaders are filling and the different leadership competencies needed for these assignments.
  • Explore and analyze the additional education and development senior physician leaders need to move into jobs such as chief clinical officer, chief physician executive, COO, system COO or CEO.
